About Us
Syringa Sound Chorus is a Sweet Adelines
International chorus. We sing exciting four-part a cappella barbershop harmony under the direction of musically gifted Andy Maddox, but this isn't your grandmother's style of barbershop! The songs, even the older "standards," are arranged into jazzy upbeat pieces that are fun to sing and perform. Internationally, there are approximately 25,000 members in countries around the globe including European nations, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and barbershop singing is one of the hottest new hobbies for women today.
Our mission is to provide an opportunity for
girls and women of all ages to learn how to sing in the barbershop style and to form lasting friendships. We rehearse weekly and perform throughout the year at venues ranging from private parties to community events. We wear costumes with sparkle and put on entertaining shows for our audiences whether it's for residents in assisted living or on stage at a holiday show.
Our name Syringa Sound Chorus comes from the
state flower of Idaho: Syringa Philadelphia lewisii, or
mock orange. It was designated as the State Flower by Idaho's first legislature though not officially adopted until March 2, 1931. These pretty flowers are an apt namesake for our chorus because the four petals represent the four-part harmony of barbershop singing, and the pure white color--a blending of all colors--represents our diversity. Our members come from all walks of life and reflect all ages, interests, and skills. We think our name perfectly
represents our close identification with, and pride in, our state and its natural beauty.

Our namesake flower, Syringa
Philadelphus lewisii, is the state flower of Idaho. It's an apt
symbol for our four-part harmonies.
